Temporary Swimming Pool Opened on 13 September 2010
A Swimming Pool, and Swimming Lessons, with the Financial Help of Brent Council (Barnhill Ward
Swimming is a sport that Brent's young people would like to do more often, according to a survey. Brent has only two public swimming pools in the borough. Chalkhill and its surroundings does not have a nearby pool.
Vacant land next to Chalkhill Primary School was considered suitable for a temporary swimming pool, and at the end of July, go-ahead was given. Construction of the pool has begun, and it is expected that in early September it will be open for everybody to use.
The Chair of Governors of the Chalkhill school approached Councillor Shafique Choudhary, and asked for help towards meeting some of the school's costs for the pool. Because of the low take-up of swimming amongst local residents, based on the distance from such facilities, and concerns amongst ethnic minorities and religious groups, other councillors were then approached. After consultation with Brent Neighbourhood Working Team, councillors are convinced with aims and usefulness of the project and give wholeheartedly support and appreciate the efforts of all those involved.
The objects of the swimming pool project are these:
Swimming lessons for all
Single sex swimming sessions
Mother and Toddler/nursery swimming sessions
Lessons for 13-19 year old.
The temporary pool will be used by Chalkhill Primary, as well as other local primary schools. In the evening and on Saturdays, the pool will be available for the community to learn to swim for a small fee (£12 for a six-week course for children, £15 for a six-week course for adults).
The activities in the area where the swimming pool is being set up will be moved to Poplar Grove Youth Centre, subject to some conditions.
As we approach the Olympics in London in 2012, we have obtained some extra sporting facilities in Barnhill ward!
