Spot the Scam

A message from OWL.
as it is everybody's benefit so I am reproducing it below:

Dear Watch Member,
According to Citizens Advice, almost three-quarters of people have been targeted by scams over the last 2 years. A scam is a type of fraud in which someone steals your money or information.
June is Scams Awareness Month, so we’ve put together some tips for catching scammers.
The first step is to spot that it’s a scam. Something could be wrong if:
  • it seems too good to be true – for example, a flight that’s significantly cheaper than you’d expect it to be
  • someone you don’t know contacts you unexpectedly
  • you suspect you’re not dealing with a real company – for example, if there’s no postal address, landline phone number or the website domain looks suspicious
  • you’ve been asked to transfer money unexpectedly or quickly
  • you’ve been asked to pay in an unusual way – for example, by vouchers or wire transfer
  • you’ve been asked to give away personal information like passwords or PINs
If you think you’ve spotted a scam, report it! You can report it to Trading Standards via the national Citizens Advice hotline on 0345 04 05 06 or online here. Without your information, it’s hard to catch fraudsters, so they can continue targeting others.
Older people can be especially vulnerable to scams. If you are concerned that somebody you know is at risk, encourage them to stop, report and talk.
