Dear Mohammed,
Thank you for all your help standing up to this awful Tory Government over their plans to punish Londoners for doing the right thing to tackle Covid-19.
Together, we have killed off the very worst punitive conditions that the Tories wanted to impose on Londoners and Transport for London.
We've saved free travel for young Londoners and those aged over 60. The £15 Congestion Charge Zone will not be expanded to the North and South Circular as the Tories wanted. And TfL fares will not increase by any more than we'd previously agreed.
However, this is not the perfect deal. The Government has said London will have to raise extra money for public transport in future years – which likely means an increase in council tax which we'll try to keep as low as possible. It'll also mean keeping in place the changes the Tories already made to the central London congestion charge for now.
These negotiations were an unneccesary distraction by Ministers at a time when all attention should have been on trying to slow the spread of Covid-19 and protecting jobs – which Ministers have clearly failed to do.
Thank you for your help. Blocking these terrible conditions just shows what we can achieve when we stand up together against this Tory Government.
Stay safe,
Sadiq Khan Labour's Mayor of London
