Tough New Measures to Crack Down on Toxic Diesel Fumes

Diesel cars, which belch out four times more nitrogen dioxide and over 20 times more particulate matter than petrol cars, will be subject to an extra £50 yearly surcharge to park in Brent to tackle toxic air pollution. The charge will apply to resident parking permits from 3 June, and all the money raised will be put towards funding the Freedom Pass for older residents and disabled people. Diesel emissions are linked with a host of health conditions, including breathing problems. In fact, it is estimated that 200 people die prematurely each year in Brent as a direct result of air pollution. It is hoped that the new surcharge will incentivise diesel owners to switch to less polluting modes of transport. The charge will increase incrementally, starting at £50 this year and increasing to £75 in April 2020, then to £100 in April 2021. The Council has acted because pollution is having a detrimental impact on the health of residents, and the health of our planet. Charging motorists is not a step taken lightly, but the Council has a duty to protect residents from toxic air pollution. Other options are available and the Council wants to incentivise people to make greener travel choices. The new surcharge is the latest in a number of green measures, from electric charging points for cars and the introduction of Lime Bikes to engine idling enforcement days.
