As expected, cases have increased this week. As of 9am on 12 March 2020, 29,764 people have been tested in the UK, of which 29,174 were confirmed negative and 590 were confirmed as positive. Eight patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have died. Figures for Brent are available up to 11 March at which point 5 Brent residents had been diagnosed with COVID-19 (please note there is a delay in publishing borough level data so the figures on the PHE website for Brent was at time of writing still 3).
The UK moved from “contain” to “delay” phase of the response on 13/03/20.
Public Health England will no longer telephone the DPH when a Brent resident tests positive.
Advice for the public is now based on whether or not they have symptoms. A travel history is no longer relevant as the virus is now circulating in the country – again as was anticipated by the Chief Medical Officer.
People are being advised to stay at home for 7 days if they have either a high temperature or a new continuous cough. They are being asked not to go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital
People with symptoms of COVID-19 will no longer be admitted to hospital unless they require inpatient care (few will). Instead residents who can will be asked to self isolate at home. A new service, COVID-19 Home Management Service (CHMS), will provide urgent primary care services to these patients and will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
