Brent -Supporting Benefit Claimants- Measures in place

Councillors have been informed the measures in place to support to support claimants of Housing Benefit, Universal Credit and other welfare benefits.

£20 weekly increase of Working Tax Credit .

Currently Brent has 6,187 residents who are going to be supported with the increase in their Working tax Credit and will have no negative impact on their Housing Benefits. The DWP will send us a notification for each resident over a period of 35 days.

Local Housing Allowance-

The changes have now been made on Brent Benefits systems. private tenants will see an increase in their Housing Benefits. The notifications will go out on Tuesday 14 April. Some private tenants may not see a change in entitlement if their full rent is already covered by Housing Benefits

£150 additional payment for Council Tax Support – Brent has received funds to support residents. Each working age recipient of Council Tax Support is due to receive up to £150 extra towards their Council Tax bill for 2020/21. 

Employment retention - employees, and self-employed people, furloughed due to the virus outbreak will have a proportion of their pay met through HMRC payments. Brent Council  is  awaiting guidance and legislative changes to this. In Brent, we currently have 10,668 residents who are employed and 3,106 residents who are self-employed. These are currently claiming Housing Benefits.
