Covid-19 - Contact Tracing

Next step will be

Contact tracing will form a significant part of the next stage of control measures for corona-virus.

The NHS CV19 app is currently being piloted in the Isle of Wight. Through the app people can report symptoms and order corona-virus tests. Automated alerts are sent to any other app users who have had close contact (being less than 2m for more than 15mins) with a case asking them to self isolate for 14 days. People will also be able to upload their details and their contacts to a national web-based system which will trigger automated alerts and phone calls to identify and advise contacts. The bulk of the calls will be made by call handlers employed by Serco with professional oversight from NHS professionals (largely recruited from NHS returners). However we have a contingency plan to enable the Council to step into contact tracing if instructed to do so.

Public Health England will be responsible for investigating and managing the more complex cases and outbreaks, working with local authorities. PHE’s health protection teams and local authority public health teams are accustomed to working together on outbreak and incident management, albeit not on the scale envisaged to control COVID 19. We are however prepared for this work.

The local authority will also have a role to play in supporting vulnerable residents who are asked to self isolate in a similar manner as it did with the shielded
